How Shall We Live?

Be ye therefore followers of God, as dear children;

And walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweetsmelling savour.

But fornication, and all uncleanness, or covetousness, let it not be once named among you, as becometh saints;

Neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor jesting, which are not convenient: but rather giving of thanks.

For this ye know, that no whoremonger, nor unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater, hath any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God.

Let no man deceive you with vain words: for because of these things cometh the wrath of God upon the children of disobedience.

Be not ye therefore partakers with them.

For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light:

(For the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth;)

Proving what is acceptable unto the Lord.

And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them.

For it is a shame even to speak of those things which are done of them in secret.

But all things that are reproved are made manifest by the light: for whatsoever doth make manifest is light.

Wherefore he saith, Awake thou that sleepest, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give thee light.

See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise,

Redeeming the time, because the days are evil.

Wherefore be ye not unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord is.

Thanksgiving V: God (to put it simply)

This is the latest in the Thanksgiving series which is based on the “New Way of Looking at Holidays” concept.

What one thing can I do to please God, glorify God, improve my relationship with God, or let God into my life more during this holiday (that will continue to be a blessing after the holiday is over)?

  1. Sing to Him. You could use my list of Songs for Thanksgiving as a guide. Or you could just sing about what you are thankful for about Him. ‘

  2. Thank Him. This is, after all, a day of thanksgiving! You could, privately or with your family, list things you are thankful for—perhaps things that just pop into your head or go through the year and it’s blessings.

  3. Talk to Him. One way to express you gratefulness to someone when they are good to you is to believe that they will be good to you in the future—not they will give you whatever you want, but that they care about you, that their gifts, though perhaps undeserved, were given out of love for you, that they will be just as good to you in the future as they have been in the past. Don’t you think that applies to God too? He cares about us. We need to trust Him. We need to talk to Him as if we believe He is listening. We need to cast our cares on Him as if we believe He will take them and do something about them. We need to ask Him for whatever we need or want as if we believe He might actually provide it (we need to remember to submit to His will though—He’s not a dispenser). If you’re not accustomed to doing this I really think it would make His day.

  4. Ask Him to help you to be more thankful, especially if you know you haven’t been as grateful as you should (especially to Him, but also to other people). Ask Him to help you appreciate Him more, to appreciate His blessings more, and to have more of the Christian grace of appreciating other people and what they do for you. Ask Him to show you where have not been thankful or appreciative, so that you can repent and start down the new path that He is going to provide for you.

  5. Treat His gifts with care. If you gave someone a gift and they wasted it (like money), abused it (like a puppy), used it in a way it wasn’t meant to be used that showed that they didn’t appreciate it’s value or purpose (like using a beautiful hand-embroidered pillowcase to mop a floor), or didn’t take care of it (like a lawn mower that basically died it’s first year because of poor care), how would you feel? How do you think God feels when we do that—not only with lawn mowers, money, pets (His little creatures that He knows), clothing, houses, cars, and toys, but our own bodies, our minds, our children, our parents, our husband or wife, or relationships in general? Take this a step further and ask yourself how God feels when we do this sort of thing and then ask Him to give us more or fix the stuff that is broken! Talk about ungratefulness. Maybe you could start a new trend this Thanksgiving—especially if you’re feeling really convicted right now!

  6. Use His gifts. How do you feel when you give someone a gift and they never use it—for whatever reason? Maybe it’s that they don’t know how to use it, or they’re afraid to use it, or they think if they get too excited about it that would be selfish, or they think it’s too nice to use and they don’t want to ruin it, or they feel like they really don’t deserve it. Or, they just don’t appreciate it. I know, sometimes we give gifts that weren’t such great ideas in the first place, but God doesn’t make those mistakes! His gifts are meant to be used, enjoyed, and appreciated.

These are only suggestions, and I would LOVE to hear what you are doing to please God, glorify God, and improve your relationship with God, or let God into your life more during this holiday (that will continue to be a blessing after the holiday is over)!
