Cabbage and Brussels Sprouts We’re Growing In 2023

Brussels sprouts and cabbage varieties we’re growing in 2023. We don’t need many Brussels sprouts but we eat a lot of cabbage. I’d like to have home-grown cabbage for fresh eating for as much of the year as possible. We’re growing old favorites and testing new-to-us varieties.

Brussels Sprouts

We haven’t even come close to mastering the growing and harvest of Brussels sprouts!

Long Island Improved

Heirloom. From Botanical Interests. Get Long Island Improved Brussels Sprouts Seeds from Botanical Interests.

Why we’re growing it: So we can have Brussels sprouts. These are supposed to be a good choice.

Where we’ll grow it: In one of the big gardens.

Cabbage

Early Jersey Wakefield

One of our standard varieties. We have seed from Main Street Seed and Supply (2018), Southern States (2018), True Leaf Market (2023), and Migardener (2023). Clearly, we don’t want to run out! Days to maturity: 63.

Why we’re growing it: Early and a favorite. Otherwise, I don’t know. When I started being the garden planner I asked the family what cabbage they want. This is one of our standards.

Where we’ll grow it: In one of the big gardens.

Brunswick

From Main Street Seed and Supply (2017) and Reimer (2023).

Why we’re growing it: One of our standards.

Where we’ll grow it: in one of the big gardens.

Late Flat Dutch and/or Premium Late Flat Dutch

From Southern Exposure Seed Exhange (2020), Southern States (2018). Days to maturity: 100.

Why we’re growing it: One of our standards.

Where we’ll grow it: Not sure yet.

Danish Ballhead

From True Leaf Market (Mountain Valley Seed Co.).

Why we’re growing it: One of our standards.

Where we’ll grow it: in one of the big gardens.

Red Acre

Still trying this one out. Southern States (2018), Todd’s (2024 ~I’m not sure how that works but that’s the use by date!). Days to maturity: 81.

Why we’re growing it: Adding red cabbage to our selection.

Where we’ll grow it: in one of the big gardens.

Ruby Perfection

An heirloom variety that we are still trying out. Days to maturity: 75. Pinetree (2023), Southern States (2018).

Why we’re growing it: Adding red cabbage to our selection.

Copenhagen Market Cabbage

From Sustainable Seed Co (2020). Large cabbages. Days to maturity: 65-75.

Why we’re growing it: Trying it out.

Stonehead Cabbage

From Fedco, 2023. Hybrid. Dense heads. Days to maturity: 68.

Why we’re growing it: My dad has previous positive experiences with stonehead cabbage and requested it.

As for “still trying out,” you’d think we’d know by now BUT we have had some pretty bad cabbage growing years lately.

Napa Cabbage

I don’t know if we’ve ever grown Napa Cabbage before. I don’t think so, unless I missed it while I was in college or as a child. From Migardener, 2023.

Why we’re growing it: Well, we like to eat it, so might as well give it a try!
